Classical Music Society

About us ………

The society was originally formed as the New Music Society in 1968, and can celebrate over forty years serving the Wyre Forest District and surrounding areas with both live and recorded music.

The word "classical" in the Society's title is not meant to reflect an interest in only one musical period, but should be taken in its more up-to-date meaning which distinguishes it from "popular" music. Our programmes are designed to cater for all tastes, whether baroque or twentieth century music, and regularly include opera, vocal, chamber, and all kinds of instrumental and orchestral music.

Briefly stated, the main purpose of the Society is to encourage the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of classical music by promoting programmes where either live or recorded music is played for members and visitors. The Society also has higher aims, including the promotion of ideas and suggestions to enrich the cultural amenities of the immediate vicinity and co-operation with other organisations and societies in local, regional and national areas.

The Society is an active affiliate of the Federation of Recorded Music Societies and strongly supports their regional and national events and participates in exchanges with other societies. The Society has also recently become an Associate Member of the National Federation of Music Societies- Making Music- that assists us in our promotion of live music recitals and concerts.

The Society Newsletter, "Quartet", detailing the various activities and other news of interest is published four times a year and is sent free of charge to members, or on payment of a small charge to cover postage, to any other interested person. Regular announcements of Society events are also included, where space permits, in the local press, whilst posters and handbills advertising special promotions are distributed to libraries, schools, colleges,
