1. J.S.Bach - Suites for Unaccompanied Cello like a friend talking to you - a Desert Island must
2. Brahms - Violin Concerto The first movement is one of my most intense and absorbing musical experiences
3. Berlioz - Requiem (esp. Tuba Mirum) brings dignity and drama to the last judgement - unlike the terror of Verdi!
4. Vaughan-Williams - Tallis Fantasia For me, nothing better describes the mystery of the Almighty than this
5. Beethoven - Emperor Concerto the triumphant self confidence of one who possibly suspected that he was the greatest composer ever
6. Elgar - Introduction and Allegro for Strings Joyful, breezy - a relaxed, mature Elgar
7. Schubert - Die Schöne Müllerin my starting point in serious listening 60 years ago - Schubert's songs - one of the bright strands in Western civilisation
8. Stravinsky - Petrushka bright, vibrant, exciting - 50 years ago my first venture into 'something different' - still a favourite
9. Berlioz - Romeo and Juliet They said he couldn't write melodies - they obviously never listened to this
10. Schubert - Symphony No. 9 the epic first movement has something in common with the first of Beethoven's 5th, though less sinister
